THIRTEENTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Richmond, Virginia

The Thirteenth Annual LGPA Conference was held October 8-9, 2009, in Richmond, Virginia at the Richmond Marriott West. Rhysa South, Assistant County Attorney for Henrico County and President of Local Government Attorneys (LGA), opened the conference with a warm welcome. Conference topics included the Family Medical Leave Act, the effective presentation of trial evidence and use of courtroom technology, the legislative process, the unauthorized practice of law (ethics), the purchase of development rights and conservation easements, and defending employment cases and grievances. New officers and directors were elected at the annual meeting. On Thursday evening, attendees enjoyed Richmond’s various shopping and dining hot spots.

TWELFTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Williamsburg, Virginia

The Twelfth Annual LGPA conference was held October 9-11, 2008, in conjunction with the Virginia Alliance of Paralegal Association’s Sixth Biannual Conference, in Williamsburg, Virginia, at the Kingsmill Marriott Hotel. The three-day program included sessions on bankruptcy law, title searches, circuit court electronic filings, the new electronic notary law, immigration law, special education law, military criminal law, criminal appeals, elder law, family law, and parliamentary procedure. A special Friday afternoon sessions was held at The Center for Legal and Court Technology at the law school at the College of William & Mary, where participants had an opportunity to learn about the latest in courtroom technology while visiting the country's most technologically advanced courtroom. LGPA members elected two new directors at its annual meeting on Thursday followed by dinner at the Seasons Restaurant, where we honored the memory of Margaret Lewis, the Association’s founder. LGPA members had the opportunity to participate in a Ghost Walk Tour of historic Williamsburg after Thursday evening’s dinner and to enjoy a cocktail reception in honor of Paralegal’s Week on Friday evening. Saturday's topics included a talk on the history of the paralegal profession, a lecture on legal ethics and a panel discussion on career opportunities for the independent paralegal.

ELEVENTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Virginia Beach, Virginia

The Eleventh Annual LGPA Conference was held October 4-5, 2007, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at the Holiday Inn SunSpree Resort. Harvey Bryant, Commonwealth Attorney for Virginia Beach and Leslie L. Lilley, City Attorney for Virginia Beach opened the conference by welcoming the attendees to Virginia Beach. Meyera Oberndorf, Mayor for the City of Virginia Beach, graciously took time out of her busy schedule to briefly address the group and join us for lunch. Conference topics included code enforcement for blighted properties, electronic records retention for the local government office, sovereign immunity, electronic case filing in the U.S. District Court, employment law with the focus on EEOC and grievance hearings, and public guardianship. New officers and directors were elected at the annual meeting. On Thursday evening, a cocktail reception and dinner were held at Rockafeller's Restaurant overlooking Rudee's Inlet.

TENTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Richmond, Virginia

The Tenth Annual LGPA Conference was held October 5-7, 2006, in conjunction with the Virginia Alliance of Paralegal Association's Fifth Biannual Conference, in Richmond, Virginia, at the Richmond Marriott West. Thursday's conference program consisted primarily of topics of interest to local government paralegals. The Honorable Robert F. McDonnell, Attorney General of Virginia, was the keynote speaker on Friday and professional development for the paralegal was the focus of Saturday's program. New officers and directors were elected at the annual meeting. LGPA celebrated its ten-year anniversary Thursday evening with a reception at Maggiano's Italian Restaurant. In addition to Thursday's celebration, a reception honoring paralegals was held Friday evening at The Place at Innsbrook. The conference was well attended by both local government and private sector paralegals from throughout the Commonwealth. LGPA and VAPA were pleased with the overwhelming success of the conference and look forward to jointly hosting future conferences.

NINTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Charlottesville, Virginia

The Ninth Annual LGPA Conference was held October 6-7, 2005, in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the English Inn of Charlottesville. Craig Brown, the Charlottesville City Attorney welcomed the attendees to Charlottesville. Conference topics included criminal forensics, FOIA, overcrowding in single family dwellings, employment/grievance law, a presentation on law office management software for the local government office, and sovereign immunity. New officers and directors were elected at the annual meeting. On Thursday evening, attendees had the opportunity to participate in a tour of the Barboursville Vineyard, which included a wine and cheese reception, followed by dinner at the Blue Ridge Café.

EIGHTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Richmond, Virginia

The Eighth Annual LGPA Conference was held September 30 - October 1, 2004, in Richmond, Virginia, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Sterling Rives, Hanover County Attorney, welcomed the attendees to Richmond and briefly spoke on the importance of paralegals in a local government attorney's office. Conference topics included first amendment issues, zoning enforcement, insurance claims, identity theft, bankruptcy, collections and a legislative update. New officers and directors were elected at the annual meeting. On Thursday evening, attendees had the opportunity to participate in an informative historic Richmond walking tour, followed by a reception and dinner at the Hard Shell Restaurant in Shockoe Slip.

SEVENTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Portsmouth, Virginia

The Seventh Annual LGPA Conference was held October 2-3, 2003, in Portsmouth, Virginia, at the Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel. Tim Oksman, Portsmouth City Attorney, welcomed the attendees to Portsmouth at the beginning of the annual meeting. New officers and directors were elected. Conference topics included personal finance/planning for the future, a step-by-step guide to conducting a title search, public speaking, legal writing, bankruptcy/electronic filing, and legal ethics/unauthorized practice of law. On Thursday evening, attendees had the opportunity to participate in an informative Olde Towne Historic District walking tour of downtown Portsmouth, followed by a reception and dinner at Brutti's Restaurant.

SIXTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Leesburg, Virginia

The Sixth Annual LGPA Conference was held October 10-11, 2002, at the Holiday Inn, Historic Carrodoc Hall, in Leesburg, Virginia. Kristen Umstattd, Mayor of Leesburg, and William E. Donnelly, III, Leesburg Town Attorney, welcomed the attendees. Conference topics included Abuse Investigations (Child and Adult), Estate Planning and Probate, Records Retention, Land Use, and Employee Internet Use. New officers and directors were elected at the annual meeting. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in a tour of the Morven Park Mansion, followed by a reception and dinner at the Laurel Brigade Inn. Attendees received an LGPA photo directory, which was prepared by Rebekah Pathirana.
